The welcome to Bishop Harper.

The incident here represented occurred on December 24th 1856. Bishop Selwyn, in his yacht, "The Southern Cross", was at Lyttleton when Bishop Harper and his family arrived from England. The background of the panel shows the mast and rigging of a ship, while the foreground is arranged by the timbers and floor of the jetty.

With one hand Bishop Selwyn grasps the hand of Bishop Harper, while with the other he holds the end of a mooring rope. (Perhaps this is the artist's tribute to Selwyn who was prepared to do any work whatsoever; perhaps as a tribute to the fact that Selwyn was a master marriner.) Mrs. Harper and the family look on at the meeting.
